In principle, donor corneas can be obtained from the entire Eurotransplant region, but they mainly originate in the Netherlands.

Cornea donors are generally tissue donors, but organ donors can donate eye tissue as well. The age limit for cornea donation is very high, up to 86 years of age.

Malignancies found in the donor do not constitute a contraindication for cornea donation. In addition, even sepsis is no longer a contraindication for cornea donation since the start of 2018.

The Netherlands Transplantation Foundation (NTS) reviews the consent granted for tissue donation and assesses the donor’s suitability.
