The NTS was recognised by the Dutch Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Sports as a socalled Organ Centre in the framework of the Dutch Organ Donation Act (WOD) and in that framework, it is considered an independent administrative body, accountable to the Dutch Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Sports. Based on its aim of increasing the number of tissue transplants, the NTS is responsible for the distribution of Dutch post-mortem tissue that is obliged to be made available for supply to Dutch patients on the Dutch waiting list.
