Recipients can be roughly divided into neonates with congenital defects (including defects requiring repeat surgery when the child is older) and patients with acute heart valve inflammations that also involve part of the heart muscle who urgently need a new heart valve.
As a result of these indications, approximately half of the recipients are less than 5 years old and two-thirds of recipients are less than 15 years old.
