Cardiovascular Tissue
ETB-BISLIFE is the only heart valve bank in the Netherlands that has a licence for the preparation and storage of donated human cardiovascular tissue (mostly heart valves and vessels). Hearts and blood vessels are dissected from donated hearts. These are mainly obtained from Dutch donors.
The prepared tissue is stored deep-frozen in liquid nitrogen vapour, meaning it has a shelf-life of 5 years. The stocked tissue can only satisfy some of the demand from Dutch and foreign hospitals.
In cases where no suitable tissue is available, ETB-BISLIFE will collaborate with a number of heart valve banks in other countries.
